Safe Routes to School is a movement to increase the number of children who walk or bike to school and their safety. Safe Routes to School initiatives include policies and programs that help communities and schools build safer sidewalks and crosswalks, map the best routes for travel, and provide other incentives and information to increase walking and bicycling.

The Public Health Law Center completed a 50-state review of Safe Routes to School state government initiatives, highlighting the laws in each state for easy review by advocates and policy makers. This project was funded by Voices for Healthy Kids®, an initiative of the America Heart Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
