Litigation can achieve objectives that are often challenging to attain through conventional policy-making processes. On the other hand, when employed by the tobacco industry, litigation can obstruct local, state, and national efforts to advance important public health objectives. Because civil suits have the potential to derail public health programs, local and state policymakers must account for the risk of litigation whenever formulating a new policy.

Join us for an hour-long webinar for an overview of the federal and New York State court systems, the life cycle of a case, and what policymakers need to know about litigation. The presenters, two seasoned public health litigators, will also discuss the impact litigation can have in advancing or hindering New York State’s tobacco control policy goals and will provide examples of a few significant tobacco-related New York State legal cases.
