Garin is a Staff Attorney on the Public Health Law Center’s Healthy Eating and Active Living team, which partners with Tribal, federal, and state government officials, as well as researchers and community groups, to develop laws and policies that advance health equity and active living.
Garin comes from a health law background. She has spent considerable time both in private practice and in a corporate setting, where she specialized in medical malpractice. In addition, Garin spent part of her time in private practice focusing on municipal law, assisting Minnesota townships with issues such as land-use disputes. Garin also has government experience, having worked at the Minnesota Department of Commerce, where she led a consumer-protection team that investigated consumer complaints against insurance companies. Garin’s work at the Commerce Department also included helping Minnesotans appeal denials of health coverage. For Garin, her experience overseeing a team that helped Minnesotans understand their consumer-protection rights brought into focus the challenges many Minnesotans face in accessing basic elements that lead to a healthy life. Garin is excited to continue her work supporting Minnesotans—particularly groups that are traditionally marginalized and underserved—so everyone can live a happy, active, and healthy life.
Outside of work, Garin enjoys spending time with her husband, two young kids, and dog, Winnie. She hopes to be a Master Gardener someday.
